Fu Xi Wen is a new "medicine". What does that actually mean?
A medicine is a belief system about how the body works and how to set it right when things go wrong. Each medicine has its own unique tools used for returning the body back to a state of health.
Eastern medicine has a set of basic theoretical components: First of all, balance is health. Qi, Yin and Yang, and the Five Elements are constructs of the body that are either in a state of balance or imbalance. Putting it all together, Eastern medicine balances Qi, Yin, and Yang inside the body to bring the body back to a state of balance. The tools used to do this include acupuncture needles, moxibustion, suction cups, massage, gua sha, and dietary therapy, among others. Regardless of the tool, the end goal is always to bring the Qi, Yin, and Yang back into balance. Diagnostic tools include pulse taking, visual diagnosis, and palpatory diagnosis. The goal of diagnosis is to identify the location of the body that is imbalanced to determine where balance needs to be restored. The diagnostic tools and the interventions all center around restoring balance.
Western medicine believes that health is the absence of discomforts. Furthermore, health is fitting in with established statistical norms in diagnostic tests. Pharmaceutical drugs, surgery, and physical therapy are used to remove discomforts and/or to assist the patient to return his personal stats to the norm. Western medicine utilizes the diagnostic tools of blood tests, x-rays (and MRI's), blood pressure cuffs, thermometers, genetic tests, and so forth to define a patient's personal stats. These are compared against average stats for a given age group. If those stats fall outside the norm, then various tools are used to return the person back to the norm to the best of the patients' ability. The norm is a set of correlations done by studies. Various disease states also have their own established normative statistics. If someone's diagnostic tests fall within the norm of a disease state, then the patient is identified as having a specific disease and all forms of intervention are meant to help that person avoid death and discomforts.
Fu Xi Wen is a new medicine in that it has a new theory of the body based on combining Eastern medicine and modern ideas of anatomy and physiology. While health is an overall felling of vitality, it is created by energetic balance within all of the tissues and systems of the body. Each tissue of the body has its own Qi, Yin and Yang, and Five Element characteristics. When these are in balance, the tissues are healthy and asymptomatic. When these are out of balance, the tissues are unhealthy and symptomatic. The tools used by Fu Xi Wen include sound, emotions, dietary therapy, herbs, homeopathic medicines, and massage, to name a few. The diagnostic tools utilized include teishin, pulse taking, and palpatory diagnosis. The goal of diagnosis is to identify the tissues or systems that are imbalanced and to compare the energetic states within each tissue to their ideal states.
